Sonja Schreurs, Secretary

Sonja Schreurs obtained her PhD in analytical and theoretical chemistry at UHasselt in 1999. Currently, she is a professor at the faculty of engineering technology of Hasselt University since 2001 and she coordinates the research group Nuclear Technology Center since 2003. Her research focuses on the valorization of industrial residues, via pyrolysis for organic rest streams and alkali activation for inorganic rest streams. The nuclear expertise, especially in NORM (naturally occurring radioactive materials), is a universal problem in many industrial residues and in the validation of them. This interdisciplinary research performed in collaboration with research groups of her research institute CMK incorporates next to economical, chemical, biological, social and legal aspects, the design of new products or applications as an extra dimension in sustainable reuse of materials e.g. in construction materials or remediation projects.

She teaches courses in analytical, environmental and radiochemistry since 2001, and didactics in engineering and technology since 2020. She organizes short international training schools using Blended educational approaches in the framework of ERASMUS+ SP, CP, CB and Erasmus+ BIP integrating soft skills and SDG workshops for master students engineering. She is an active member of the Cherne network since 2005 in many international IPs. In the EUTERP and ETRAP conferences our international training mobility for master students in nuclear engineering is often presented by her or her partners and colleagues.
