CV: Dr Yiannis Parpottas is an Associate Professor of Physics at Frederick University in Cyprus. He obtained a PhD in Nuclear Experimental Physics from Ohio University in USA (2004) and he was employed at the Physics Department of Duke University in USA. At Frederick University, he established and lead the Cyprus Nuclear Physics group which consists of three Units: Heavy Ion Collisions (HIC), Environmental Radioactivity (ER), and Nuclear Medicine Imaging (NMI). The HIC Unit is a member of the HADES Collaboration (7 EU countries, 18 institutions) conducting research at the Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research in Germany. The ER Unit performs systematic gamma radiation and radon measurements and calculates the doses received by the population. The NMI Unit coordinates many R&I (multi-partner, large consortia) projects and developed innovative products related to advacements in nuclear medicine. The NMI Unit collaborates with the largest Nuclear Medicine Departments of the country as well as with local and foreign Universities. A number of postdoctoral scientists in medical physics and PhD students conduct(ed) research at the Unit. At Frederick University, he is also teaching physics and radiology courses, and he involves in education and training related to radiation protection.
Dr Parpottas has participated in more than 20 projects funded by the US National Science Foundation, the US Department of Energy, the IAEA, EU and CyRIF. He has been coordinating R&I funded projects for the last 15 years. He is the author of more than 144 publications (scopus h-index: 28) in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. In addition, he is a proposal evaluator in EU National Agencies and in the Editorial Boards of Journals. He is a Board member of the Cyprus Association of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering (CAMPBE) and a Board member of the Cyprus Society of Nuclear Medicine (CySNM) for the last decade. He is also affiliated with the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE), the International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMP), the International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA), the European Federation of Organizations of Medical Physics (EFOMP) and the European Alliance for Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES) through CAMPBE.
Moreover, he is a member of the Management Committee of EURATOM, a member of an expert committee for the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG), he is the National Counterpart in IAEA programs related to radiation and protection, a member of the EC SET Plan IWG 10 on Nuclear Safety, and a member of the National Advisory Committee on Radiation Protection & Nuclear Safety.
